Jon Askins retired as a Captain with the Winter Park Police Department in 2017 after more than 25 years of service as a sworn officer. Jon has trained law enforcement officers across the U.S. with the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST), helped develop training standards with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and contributed to pedestrian and cyclist safety programs in collaboration with the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM). He has also served as an instructor for the Florida Attorney General’s Crime Prevention Training Institute and served as a certified Crime Prevention Practitioner, specializing in wayfinding and public safety in areas where vehicles and pedestrians share public spaces. Jon holds a B.A. in Criminal Justice Administration and is a Past President of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 64. With over three decades of experience in traffic safety, Jon serves as the District 5 Law Enforcement Liaison (LEL).

 

As the District 5 LEL, Jon partners with and supports approximately 59 law enforcement agencies across seven North Central Florida counties in their traffic safety efforts. His responsibilities include facilitating and promoting participation in state and national traffic safety initiatives, serving on traffic safety coalitions and Community Traffic Safety Teams (CTSTs) within the district, assisting agencies in acquiring and managing grants to address traffic safety needs or expand programs, coordinating the exchange of critical information, such as officer training, crash data, safety and sobriety checkpoints, and legal updates, fostering interagency coordination, conducting training sessions and networking meetings, and implementing traffic safety mobilizations including Click It or Ticket, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, and Operation Southern Slow Down.
