About the Campaign

Click It or Ticket is a national high-visibility enforcement campaign focused on the consequences of not wearing a safety belt. The goal is to increase awareness and encourage all drivers and passengers to buckle up—every trip, every time.

Florida law enforcement agencies are encouraged to conduct high-visibility enforcement and public education on safety belt and child restraint laws. Agencies should submit a campaign activity report at the end of the campaign.

This is a reportable campaign. Reports will be due by June 30, 2025, and may be submitted below or by clicking here.

Dates to Remember

Facts

  • On average, every 47 minutes someone not wearing a seat belt dies in a car crash.
  • In 2022, 11,302 people killed in car crashes were not wearing seat belts.
  • The national estimate of seat belt use during the day by adult front-seat passengers in 2023 was 91.9%.
  • In 2022, more unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants died in traffic crashes at night (6,252) than during the day (4,949).
  • In 2022, 57% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts.
  • Among young adults 18 to 34 killed while riding in passenger vehicles in 2022, more than half (60%) were completely unrestrained — one of the highest percentages for all age groups.
  • Men make up the majority of those killed in traffic crashes. Men are also overrepresented in unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant fatalities with 54% of men (8,098 people) and 41% of women (3,201 people) dying without a seat belt in 2022.

How To Participate

Florida law enforcement agencies are encouraged to step up enforcement and public education efforts related to safety belt use during the campaign period. At the conclusion of the campaign, agencies are asked to submit a campaign report by June 30, 2025.

The report will collect the following:

  • Approximate number of hours dedicated to safety belt enforcement
  • Number of safety belt checkpoints (if any)
  • Number of press conferences (if any)
  • Number of media stories or articles featuring your agency’s efforts
  • Number of social media posts or interactions
  • Number of safety belt enforcement contacts
  • Number of child restraint enforcement contacts
  • Total number of traffic citations
  • Name of exemplary officer for education and/or enforcement efforts
  • Results of the Local Safety Belt Use Survey (see below)

As part of the campaign, agencies are also asked to conduct a Local Safety Belt Use Survey before and after the campaign period. This involves observing at least 100 drivers and front passengers at a minimum of three different intersections or locations within your jurisdiction. To calculate the usage rate percentage, divide the number of people observed wearing safety belts by the total number observed, then multiply by 100. (Yes ÷ Total) × 100 = Usage Rate. Average the usage rates from all three locations to determine your agency’s final percentage. An optional worksheet is available for download to help track observations and calculate usage rates. This form does not need to be submitted.
